Opened by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, this complex for older people has won an international award for its design. The traditionally-constructed complex provides 37 self-contained flats and communal facilities for retired people needing additional care. Located on the outskirts of Brighton, the complex offers residents an on-site doctor’s surgery, a library, a hairdressing salon and a café. The individual flats provide one or two bedroom accommodation and each have a lounge, kitchen and bathroom plus a community alarm link. The complex received a major accolade in 2007 when it was chosen as the winner of the WELHOPS European Design Award (Welfare Housing Policies for Older People), triumphing over 44 competing housing schemes that had been shortlisted from across Europe.
