Overview
Rutherford Appleton Laboratories are a world leading scientific organisation based in Wantage Oxon. Ultra high intensity physics research is undertaken utilizing incredibly powerful lasers. The Astra Gemini Project involves the upgrading of the existing lasers by three orders of magnitude. The new dual beam petawatt facility will be the highest intensity laser in the world and will allow ground breaking research. The works involved the construction of a substantial concrete “bunker” to precise tolerances to house the facility. Walls, floors and roof were constructed up to 1m thick to contain the lasers. Offices and laboratories were constructed within the main facility.
